Mark 8:22-25 narrates the marvelous healing of a blind man outside the village of Bethsaida through the power of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is one of only two episodes of healing involving blind men recorded in the gospel of Mark. In the passage, after the man is brought to Jesus, our

Lord spits into his eyes, places His hands on him, and asks, “Do you see anything?”

“I see people; they look like trees walking around,” the man replies. Once again, Jesus places His hands on the blind man’s eyes, and this time, his sight is completely restored. The man no longer sees men as trees but as who they really are–human beings.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

– Matthew 7:7-8

Ephesians 6:12

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

A Christian without spiritual vision is like the man at Bethsaida when he could only see men like trees. They have a fuzzy view of the supernatural–if they even have one at all–and that is a dangerous way to live.

What is spiritual vision?

Our physical eyes only give us physical vision, and the Bible has made us understand that our universe doesn’t only comprise of the physical realm but also the spiritual realm. 2 Corinthians 2:14 says, “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).

Our universe as we know it was created from the spiritual. The sea, animals, plants, and planets were all made by God (1 Colossians 1:16). The more important and more powerful realm is the spiritual realm. That’s where God functions. Spiritual vision allows us to see or perceive spiritual reality and function in it.

The importance of spiritual vision

Everyone faces challenges in life. Sometimes you may find yourself in valleys, caught up in raging storms, or smack in the middle of a pandemic and have no clue where God is trying to lead you or what lesson He’s trying to use the experience to teach you. What’s happening is you’re looking

for spiritual answers in the physical world.

Ephesians 6:12 tells us, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

Those who walk without spiritual discernment are easily swayed by the circumstances around them. They’re at the mercy of the enemy. In the midst of trouble, they cower. But those with spiritual eyesight don’t see life the way others see it. They walk in spiritual authority and faith because they know that the God of the universe has their back.

Sharpening your spiritual vision

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door

will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8).

As you spend time with God through prayer and speaking in tongues, your spiritual eyesight will be opened. Also, meditating and memorizing Scripture will help bolster your faith and make you more in tune with the supernatural. God will also fill you with His Spirit, who would teach

you how to use the gift of spiritual vision to His glory.
